Cruising for A Cause

Randy and son Cody with Marine Family

We would like to give a shout-out to Randy and Ginger Clark, who recently orchestrated a Military Appreciation event at Marine Corps Air Station, New River, Camp LeJeune in Jacksonville, NC.

This unique event doubled as an antique boat show, “to bring people together with a common interest in historic, antique and classic boats, sharing fellowship, information, experience and exchange of ideas.”

We were honored to donate six magnums of Jarhead Red to the event. In Ginger’s recap, she wrote, “We held our ‘Pot Luck’ auction where the boaters had brought in an item to be put for auction.  We had a vintage wooden slalom ski, handmade crafts, decorative items, two large seascape framed prints, tools, bags, boat glassware, a Chris-Craft advertisement signed by Chris Smith and six magnum bottles of Jarhead Red wine which had been part of a donation to us by Curtis Winery, which also included T-shirts and ball caps! Jarhead Red is a wine made for Marines by Marines, with portions of the proceeds going to a scholarship fund for the children of fallen Marines…We collected over $700 dollars for Wounded Warriors – OoRAH.”

You can read Ginger’s full story about the event on WoodyBoater.com. Thanks to the Clarks for their support of our military!

A Wall of Jarhead Red at Henderson Hall

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Here’s a shot of a Jarhead Red end cap from the store at the USMC’s Henderson Hall installation in Virginia. Looks like they’ll be well stocked for summer barbecues!

Thanks to our sales team and friends out there for supporting Jarhead Red and the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

Honoring John Glenn

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

This month, we are honoring Lieutenant Colonel John H. Glenn, Jr. with an “Around The World” special, consisting of one bottle each of the 2008 Jarhead Red, 2008 Jarhead Reserve and 2009 Jarhead Chard. Price includes shipping!

Glenn began his military career with the U.S. Navy, but was later reassigned to the U.S. Marine Corps. He flew 63 combat missions in the Korean war. According to Wikipedia, Glenn “gained the dubious nickname ‘magnet ass’ from his apparent ability to attract enemy flak.”

On April 10, 1959, Glenn was named as one of the original seven Project Mercury astronauts. Three years later, became the first American to orbit the Earth. It was a cornerstone achievement that culminated in U.S. astronauts landing on the moon seven years later.

The Growing Season Begins

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

The new growing season is upon in the Santa Ynez Valley as as we head into the “bud break” period in the weeks ahead.

Bud break occurs when the little buds on the vine break open with the first new growth of the season. From the buds come the shoots that will produce leaves and fruit. Later in the spring, little “flower” clusters appear on the young shoots, initiating a process called “flowering,” whereby the young buds self-pollinate and set the fruit for the upcoming harvest.
It’s almost hard to believe that these tiny leafing buds will, in the span of just six months, yield a large canopy with ripe clusters, and ultimately delivery a hearty, robust red wine like Jarhead Red. Such is the annual magic of winegrowing.

Announcing The “Henderson Field” Special

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

In honor of the end of the Guadalcanal Campaign on the same date as today, we are offering a “$43 Henderson Field Special” featuring two bottles of 2008 Jarhead Red Reserve signed by proprietor Adam Firestone and offered in a cloth tote with free shipping now through the end of February.

The Guadalcanal Campaign, fought between August 7, 1942 and February 9, 1943, was for the control of a key airstrip, later named Henderson Field after a Marine pilot lost in the Battle of Midway. The victory at Guadalcanal ended all Japanese expansion attempts and placed the Allies in a position of clear supremacy. They suffered and they did their duty so a sheltered homeland could enjoy peace. We owe those Marines a profound debt of gratitude.

A Family of Marines

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

Sometimes we get motivating feedback that we are inspired to share. On that note, here is a note we just received from a customer named Rae:

Had to send a note your way and say thank you so much for what you do. I have seen the results of efforts 1st hand and need to let you know the impact you and your wine have had on my family. First a little hisory. My father was a Marine, my brother is a Marine and I am a Marine. I recieved an honorable discharge to raise my family as my former husband was in the Corps and with both of us serving, it was no place to raise a family. My father received a medical discharge after they found out that he was hit in the head with a javelin when he was young and now has issues with one leg and is missing a portion of his skull (He lied to get in the Corps). And my older brother just returned from his tour in Afghanistan and is MGySgt with 28 years in. OORAH!!

So with that all said – SEMPER FI and now how you and your wine have helped us. My niece Katie DeYott has recieved the Marine Corp Scholorship twice now and has gone to Washington and spoken at various events promoting the opportunities that are now afforded her. She even met the Commandant. Without your support this scholarship may not be available. She has grown into such a beautiful an amazing young woman and I am so blessed. By doing what you do – whether it is a marathon, donating to a community function, or selling a bottle of wine – you support her and I appreciate that. Thank you. God Bless and Semper Fi.

Thank you, Rae!

Happy Birthday, USMC!

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Today marks the 235th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. For those who aren’t familiar with the story, the United States Marine Corps has been celebrating its birthday every year since it was founded November 10, 1775 by commission of the Continental Congress at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia.

Happy birthday, USMC! Semper Fi.

P.S. In some ways, this day also marks the birthday of Jarhead Red. The wine was conceived by Adam Firestone in 1999 as a celebratory bottling for the annual Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation’s Birthday Ball in Los Angeles. Over the years, the wine gained a following by word of mouth and was enjoyed at Birthday Balls around the country. Eventually, to meet growing demand, the wine was released for distribution nationwide.

2008 Jarhead Reserve Coming Soon

Monday, November 1st, 2010

We are nearing the release of our 2008 Jarhead Reserve, a limited-edition wine that is crafted as our finest expression of the vintage. The 2008 vintage also features a new look for the Jarhead Reserve line, as depicted in the accompanying photo.

The 2008 Jarhead Reserve is composed mainly of Cabernet Franc from the Firestone family’s Rock Hollow Vineyard in the heart of Santa Barbara County’s Santa Ynez Valley. This small vineyard occupies a southeast-facing slope, where gentle exposure to the elements ensures a long, steady growing season. This orientation is enhanced by the vineyard’s rocky soils, rolling topography and thorough natural drainage, which combine to yield complex, intensely flavored fruit. A contribution of Syrah from the Firestone family’s nearby Kingsley Vineyard brings a deep black fruit quality to the wine, while Merlot from Westerly Vineyard in eastern Santa Ynez Valley adds suppleness and depth to the palate.

Only 560 cases of the 2008 Jarhead Reserve were produced. Look for it to be released within the next month.

2010 Harvest Report

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

This is a harvest season to remember, started off cool, followed by a heat wave last week, and now back to cool again. The heat kicked the ripening into a higher gear, but the harvest is still considerably later than usual. The estate fruit looks great, and the added hang time will bring nice balance and intensity. Stay tuned!
